Afterwards, he worked in the Institute of Petroleum and Organic Geochemistry at the Research Centre Juelich, a major federal research centre in Germany. There, he acted as senior geologists and leader of the Organic Petrology Laboratories before becoming responsible for the Basin Modelling Group in 1991.
After 1993, he acted as Vice-Director of the Institute of Petroleum and Organic Geochemistry. He taught at the Ruhr-University, Bochum, where he received his Habilitation doctoral degree (D.Sc.), becoming an Adjunct Professor of Geology in 1993. In 1997, he accepted a Professorship in Geology and Geochemistry of Petroleum and Coal at RWTH Aachen University.
His current group performs research in petroleum and gas geology and geochemistry, basin modelling, coal geology and environmental geochemistry. Since 1993, he has supervised 35 Ph.D. students. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Petroleum Geochemistry and the International Journal of Coal Geology.
He is also the coordinator of the German priority research programme "Dynamics of Sedimentary Basins under varying Stress Regimes (DFG SPP 1135)". He has authored, co-authored or edited five books and co-authored more than 200 publications in international journals and books. Publications include:
