The IDEA League with its newly-defined strategic goals strives for collaboration in research, especially in Energy, Environment and Health, all of which are crucial to cope with the problems that society is facing at the beginning of the 21st century. By bundling our resources and expertise, we aim to make a significant contribution to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA).
In order to further exploit existing synergies of our collaboration, a series of workshops was developed, with the goal to establish an IDEA League R&D agenda. In a first step three workshops—on Energy, Environment, and Health, respectively—were held in the summer of 2007, in order to recognise common strengths and interests.
On 16-17 July 2007, professors from all IDEA League partners met at TU Delft for the first IDEA League Workshop on Energy.
See NEWIDEAS N°38 for details.
On 4-5 September 2007, professors from all IDEA League partners met at ETH Zurich for the IDEA League Workshop on Environment. First, the environment-related research in each IDEA League partner university was presented, then joint research was discussed. Finally, four priority areas were identified, namely 'Climate Change, Pollution and Risks', 'Sustainable Management of Resources', 'Environmental Technologies' and 'Earth Observation and Assessment Tools for Sustainable Development'.
On 26-27 September 2007, professors from all IDEA League partners met at Imperial College London for the first IDEA League Workshop on Health. After the research at each IDEA League partner university was presented, it was discussed which systems could be most effectively applied to the major health problems in Europe over the next 25 years. It became evident that our collaborative research should focus on neurodegenerative disorders and cardiocvascular medicine.
Paris Tech proposed to add Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to the areas of concentration, and will organize a workshop to start the collaboration.
