The IDEA League strives for collaboration in research between its partners, especially in areas of science and technology, which are crucial to cope with the problems that society is facing at the beginning of the 21st century, and, consequently, by bundling its resources and expertise, to make a significant contribution to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and the European Research Area (ERA).
The IDEA League aims to be a driving force behind innovative and sustainable solutions to European and global problems, by providing useful results in research and development of ground-breaking technologies, based on society’s needs and demands. It will address research-related issues capitalizing on an excellent record in multidisciplinary research, outstanding academic staff and state-of-the-art facilities, thus helping Europe to regain its international pre-eminent technological position necessary for long-term economic growth within a prosperous, sustainable, global environment.
The IDEA League research portfolio is focused on excellence. Currently, the IDEA League employs about 17.500 of the best academic and research staff, resulting in about 18.000 published articles per year, a cumulative patent portfolio of 3412, and, in 2006, 168 spin-out companies with partial university ownership.
In response to the growing challenges of global competition, the IDEA League is joining the forces of its five partner universities towards implementing the goals of the Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs by:
In order to promote research collaborations in its defined key areas, the IDEA League has created Excellence Clusters on Energy, Environment, Health, ICT, and Mobility.
In order to involve IDEA League students in research collaborations at the earliest possible stage, the IDEA League has created a special grant scheme for students that is open to all student levels: bachelor, master and doctorates. The grant is intended for student research projects in the area of the IDEA League Excellence Clusters on Energy, Environment, Health, ICT, and Mobility.
