Aachen is the westernmost German city, located at the border to Belgium and the Netherlands. It is famous for its historical, cultural and architectural heritage, with Charlemagne as the central figure. He still influences the city today in the form of the prestigious “Karlspreis”, contributing to the city’s European importance. Because of its hot springs Aachen has been a bath since the 17th century; it is the city of the World Equestrian Festival (CHIO) and enthusiastic Karneval and Alemannia Aachen football fans. The young and lively city is shaped by around 40.000 students and scientists who study and work at RWTH Aachen University, the Universities of Applied Sciences and several research institutes.
RWTH Aachen University with its 260 institutes in nine faculties, 407 professors, over 6,600 personnel and 30,270 students is one of the leading Technical Universities in Europe. RWTH Aachen University conducts an international, innovative and interdisciplinary approach, and has been confirmed as one of the top universities in Germany within the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments in October 2007. In the context of the initiative, RWTH Aachen has formulated an Institutional Strategy with the staff unit Integration Team – Human Resources, Gender and Diversity Management (IGaD) as one of its central stakeholders. RWTH Aachen has thus been the first German university to establish a strong and sustainable structural framework for the realisation of a coherent Gender and Diversity strategy. The Integration Team works in the areas of human resources and organisational development, work life balance, research and teaching.
