TANDEMplusIDEA is a development programme that has been designed specifically for female research staff from the IDEA League - RWTH Aachen, ETH Zürich, Imperial College London and TU Delft. The participants of the project are female post doctoral researchers in science or engineering who intend to build upon their academic career and develop the skills to become a professor.

Programme

TANDEMplusIDEA is a modular mentoring and career development scheme that consists of three elements – Mentoring, Training and Networking. Following the selection process, it began in February 2008 and ended in March 2009.

Based on the idea of a gender-equal human resources development, the programme supports 16 participants (four from each of the universities) to plan their scientific career and to help them build and consolidate relevant networks. It will enable female research staff to be better equipped to apply for, and secure, academic posts and promotion, thus ultimately leading to an increased number of female professors in Europe and worldwide. As a new member of IDEA, ParisTech is an associated member in the programme.

Conditions

The mentees have to take an active role in communicating with their mentors and building their relationship. They are expected to participate in the evaluation of the programme and in all of the events that take place at venues in the four countries (in London, Delft, Zürich and Aachen).

To become a part of TANDEMplusIDEA a detailed application was required, including a letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, description of current research projects and teaching experience, and an explanation of why the participant’s university would benefit from her attendance at TANDEMplusIDEA. Formal applications were followed by personal interviews.

Participation fees were covered by the programme. This included accommodation and full board for all days as well as materials. Travel costs could be reimbursed up to an amount of 200 Euros.
